Welcome from our President
A welcome to Senior Scholars at Queens members and guests . . .
We are proud of our affiliation and rich tradition with Queens University of Charlotte that began in 1973. We are structured as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Our organization is apolitical and non-religious. Senior Scholars Board members and other dedicated volunteer members are responsible for daily activities and long-range planning.
Before the pandemic began earlier this year, we met on Friday mornings for live presentations in Wolfe Hall at Providence United Methodist Church (PUMC) in Charlotte. With 1000+ members, our weekly attendance has approached 500. However, those in-person meetings were suspended to follow federal and state health and safety restrictions and guidelines. The Board recently voted to do our 2020 fall programming through virtual presentations that will be available on seniorscholars.net.
Each Friday, starting September 11, we anticipate a virtual presentation on a broad range of subjects – Great Decisions topics; current world, national and local affairs; education; historical events; and medical, social and political issues, to name a few. Our prominent speakers will be from local universities, business organizations, healthcare and law. Following their 45-minute presentation, many speakers will hold a 30-minute Q&A.
During a normal year, speaker meetings/presentations are our primary focus. But we offer other interesting activities as well. Popular among members is the annual educational retreat (led by speakers prominent in their field) at Wildacres in the beautiful North Carolina mountains near Little Switzerland. Other options are periodic field trips, monthly Friday pre-meeting newcomer coffees, and periodic informal social luncheons at local restaurants with a group known as the Lunch Bunch. In addition, we gather for a formal luncheon after our last May meeting and have a holiday luncheon after the last November meeting. The fellowship we enjoy at these gatherings is an integral part of who we are. Unfortunately these meetings and activities have been canceled for 2020.
New and current members receive an informative weekly email regarding upcoming meeting programs that include informational topics from Queens University. Our general email address is email@example.com. In addition to information provided to members through email, we post a variety of information weekly on our web site seniorscholars.net.
Many of our members joined primarily to listen to weekly speakers, while others wish to become more involved in the organization. We have several committees that periodically seek new members. A list of those committees, their activities and chairperson can be found in the yearly updated Directory. We welcome your interest and involvement.
We are proud of our 47 year heritage and mission in providing an opportunity for members and guests to “listen and learn, be challenged and have their curiosity awakened” by prominent speakers. Please consider joining as a new member or exploring our organization as a guest. Hopefully 2021 will bring better times that will move us safely back to the enjoyment of meetings at PUMC. In the meantime, please join us for the programming we offer online.
My respect and best wishes to all,
Walt Romano, 2020 Senior Scholars at Queens President
