Every great city has a great public research university.
From understanding complex societal issues to business incubation to scientific achievements that move all of us forward, public research universities are a vital resource for enhancing a region’s economic and social capital.
UNC Charlotte has grown to the second largest institution in the state and serves as North Carolina’s only urban research university.
Dr. Sharon Gaber, chancellor of UNC Charlotte, will discuss the critical role the institution plays in the region, where the University is headed and how increased research and partnership can positively impact the entire Charlotte community.

Dr. Sharon L. Gaber, Chancellor, UNC Charlotte

Dr. Gaber joined UNC Charlotte on July 1, 2020, becoming the school’s fifth chancellor and the first woman to hold the office. She previously served as president of the University of Toledo, where she earned national recognition for her efforts to increase enrollment, improve graduation and retention rates, keep education affordable, increase research funding, improve connection to the surrounding metro region and make the campus environment diverse and inclusive. Prior to that Dr. Gaber served as provost and vice chancellor of academic affairs at the University of Arkansas; interim provost at Auburn University; and as a faculty member and administrator for the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. She holds an A.B. in Economics and Urban Studies from Occidental College, an M.P.L. in Urban Planning from the University of Southern California, and a Ph.D. from Cornell University in City & Regional Planning.
