Alzheimer’s disease is thought to begin 20 years or more before symptoms arise.1-8 It starts with changes in the brain that are unnoticeable to the person affected.
Only after years of brain changes do individuals experience noticeable symptoms such as memory loss and language problems.

Mark A Pippenger, MD, a leading behavioral neurologist at Novant Health Memory Care – SouthPark, has over 20 years of experience in treating patients with neurological diseases that affect memory, thinking, and behavior, which include Alzheimer Disease, dementia with Lewy Bodies, and Frontotemporal Lobar Degeneration. He is board-certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and is a member of the American Academy of Neurology and of the International Society to Advance Alzheimer’s Research and Treatment (ISTAART). Dr. Pippenger is a widely respected medical professional in the Alzheimer’s community and is currently serving on the local board Alzheimer’s Association Board Western Carolina Chapter.
A native of Arkansas, born in Jonesboro, Dr. Pippenger graduated with a degree in zoology from Arkansas State University and a medical degree and residency in neurology from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) in Little Rock, Ark. After a few years of private practice in the mountains of western North Carolina, Dr. Pippenger completed a fellowship in behavioral neurology and dementia at the University of California in Los Angeles. He most recently served on the faculty of UAMS before moving to Charlotte in 2019 to start a memory clinic for Novant Health.
Dr. Pippenger and has always had a love for Irish music. He plays the bodhran, a traditional drum, and actually lived in Ireland in 2006. He is also a member of the Dragonfly Society of the Americas. Dr. Pippenger is married with nine children/stepchildren.
