In this presentation we will investigate what is and what is not “economic warfare,” how and where these policies have been used in the past, the extent to which their use is expanding, and under what conditions they are effective.

Dr. Dale Smith
Professor Global Studies, UNC-Charlotte


Dale Smith joined the University of North Carolina Charlotte as Professor and Chair of the Department of Global Studies in 2016. Before obtaining a B.A. in International Relations from the University of Southern California, he studied at Schiller College (Germany) and the London School of Economics. He received a Ph.D. in Political Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and worked as a researcher for eight years at the Wissenschaftszentrum Berlin.

Before moving to Charlotte, he was the Paul Piccard Professor of Political Science at Florida State University. Professor Smith’s research is in the area of international political economy, an interdisciplinary field focused on the interactions between economic processes (trade and finance) and political institutions.

He also studies regional economic integration and recently began a project focusing on citizens’ attitudes toward immigrants and immigration.
