DESCRIPTION:GREAT DECISIONS TOPIC: Economic Warfare: When is it warfare and when is it effective?\nIn this presentation we will investigate what is and what is not “economic warfare\,” how and where these policies have been used in the past\, the extent to which their use is expanding\, and under what conditions they are effective. \n\nBIOGRAPHY \nDale Smith joined the University of North Carolina Charlotte as Professor and Chair of the Department of Global Studies in 2016. Before obtaining a B.A. in International Relations from the University of Southern California\, he studied at Schiller College (Germany) and the London School of Economics. He received a Ph.D. in Political Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and worked as a researcher for eight years at the Wissenschaftszentrum Berlin. \nBefore moving to Charlotte\, he was the Paul Piccard Professor of Political Science at Florida State University. Professor Smith’s research is in the area of international political economy\, an interdisciplinary field focused on the interactions between economic processes (trade and finance) and political institutions. \nHe also studies regional economic integration and recently began a project focusing on citizens’ attitudes toward immigrants and immigration.

DESCRIPTION:TOPIC: Arts and Culture – The Charlotte Way\nOur presenter will give a look into the arts and culture in the Charlotte community over the decades. \nWe will discuss the formation of the ASC (Arts and Science Council) to the formation of the Charlotte Arts and Culture Advisory Board. The discussion will include a look at arts funding\, arts diversity and the role the community at large in the arts. \nA recent release of the State of Arts and Culture in Charlotte produced by the Arts and Culture Advisory Board will also be unveiled. \nWe will hold back nothing – the good\, the bad and the “whatever” of arts and culture in Charlotte. We will end with a view of the future – where should Charlotte’s arts and culture “be” in ten years. \n\nBIOGRAPHY \nKevin L. Patterson\, a retired director at IBM\, worked for them for 31 years in various technical\, sales\, management\, and executive roles. \nMr. Patterson is very involved in numerous nonprofit organizations. Currently\, he is vice chairman of the Charlotte Arts and Culture Advisory Board and the immediate past-chairman and board member of Jazz Arts Charlotte. \nHe serves on the national board of directors as meetings and conventions chair for 100 Black Men of America\, Inc. He has chaired numerous arts organizations including Arts & Science Council\, ASC’s North East Advisory Council and the Public Arts Commission.

He now serves as the TV host for Healthline and Whole Body Health. His awards include Emmys\, Telly’s\, the 2008 CableFax award for best cable health show host. \nHe also serves as the worldwide Medical Director for Texas Instruments and the Cardinal Health corporations and teaches as a courtesy Professor at the Univ. of Florida College of Medicine.
