SUMMARY:Shakespeare is Playing You with Dave Collins
DESCRIPTION:TOPIC: Shakespeare is Playing You\nSPEAKER: Dave Collins\, Professor of English\, Emeritus\nShakespeare’s language\, Early Modern English\, can be confusing for people who haven’t spent a lot of time with the Bard. \nBest advice? Don’t worry about understanding every word. Enjoy yourself and focus on the big picture. Sometimes understanding depends on knowing about ideas current in Shakespeare’s world. Sometimes a quick wit and a good ear are enough. Sometimes what matters is a good ear and a good heart. \nWe’ll look at an example or two in each category to see how Shakespeare uses language to get around our defenses–nobody likes to be preached to!–to move his audience toward his way of seeing the world. \n

SUMMARY:Global Famine with Dr. Colleen Hammelman
DESCRIPTION:GREAT DECISIONS TOPIC: Global Famine\nSPEAKER: Dr. Colleen Hammelman\, Associate Professor in the Department of Geography and Earth Sciences and Director of the Charlotte Action Research Project at UNC Charlotte\nWorld hunger has galvanized public attention and policymakers for centuries. \nWhile significant political\, economic\, and technological advances have been made such that the worst cases of widespread hunger (famine) are much less common today; there remain significant\, and growing\, rates of food insecure people worldwide. Recent geopolitical and environmental challenges are exacerbating hunger and creating new potential for famine. \nDrawing on the speaker’s 10+ years of food systems research\, this lecture will examine contemporary drivers of hunger and famine and ongoing challenges to meeting the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goal of Zero Hunger by 2030. It will also share current political\, economic and technological responses\, and innovative solutions that are being pursued across the globe. Famine and world hunger are long-standing and systemic challenges\, but significant and promising interventions are being implemented worldwide. \n\nBIOGRAPHY \nDr. Hammelman is an Associate Professor in the Department of Geography and Earth Sciences and Director of the Charlotte Action Research Project at UNC Charlotte. \nHer research and teaching broadly consider questions of social justice in urban food systems across the Americas. In particular\, her research focuses on better understanding how migrants create and experience urban places through food relationships in an effort to create a more sustainable and equitable food system. \nShe has published widely on topics such as food security\, urban agriculture\, and changing food landscapes\, including a 2022 book titled: Greening Cities by Growing Food: A Political Ecology Analysis of Urban Agriculture in the Americas. Before joining UNC Charlotte in 2017\, Dr. Hammelman was a Post-doctoral Fellow at the Culinaria Research Centre at the University of Toronto-Scarborough. \nShe completed her PhD in Geography and Urban Studies at Temple University in Philadelphia\, her MA in International Affairs at American University in Washington\, DC\, and her BA in Political Science and Technical Journalism at Colorado State University.

SUMMARY:Sorting Out Charlotte with Dr. Tom Hanchett
DESCRIPTION:Today’s top local issues — school boundaries\, affordable housing\, gentrification — are often shaped by Charlotte’s neighborhood geography. How did Charlotte develop its current ”wedge and crescent” pattern of wealth in the south\, less prosperity across the center of the county? Community historian Dr. Tom Hanchett returns to explore that sometimes surprising story\, based on the 2020 second edition of his history of Charlotte\, Sorting Out the New South City. \nEducated at Cornell\, University of Chicago and UNC Chapel Hill\, Dr. Hanchett is a popular speaker on our city’s past and present. Charlotte Magazine calls him “Charlotte’s Dr. History” and named him a 2015 Charlottean of the Year. Find his wide-ranging writings — neighborhood walking tours\, “recorded in Charlotte” music history\, immigrant restaurant profiles and more.

SUMMARY:2023 Atlantic Hurricane Season\, What to Expect in the Carolinas with Brad Panovich
DESCRIPTION:TOPIC: 2023 Atlantic Hurricane Season\, What to Expect in the Carolinas with Brad Panovich\nA detailed look at the climatological set-up for the upcoming hurricane season. \n\nBIOGRAPHY \nGrowing up outside of Cleveland\, Ohio\, I’ve always been fascinated by severe weather. I love thunderstorms\, tornadoes\, blizzards and hurricanes. My parents thought I was crazy\, but they soon realized I really loved this stuff! \nBy the time I was 6 years old\, I knew I wanted to be a meteorologist. I wanted to be a scientist\, not some “TV weather guy\,” I wanted to chase storms and do research. Plus\, those TV guys were always wrong and really weren’t trained meteorologists (so I thought – wrongly\, as it turned out some were). But at Copley High School in Copley\, Ohio\, I got to take part in a mentorship program with a TV meteorologist and a National Weather Service meteorologist. I was really blown away by all the computers and technology the TV meteorologist used\, and I really enjoyed making graphics. Not to mention the thing I love about weather the most is sharing my passion with others\, even if they think I’m kind of strange. \nI then picked my college based on the meteorology program. So naturally\, I attended The Ohio State University and played a little soccer there along the way. During my junior and senior years at OSU\, I was able to chase tornadoes with my fellow students and professors during the Spring quarter. It was the best spring break I could have imagined. \nAfter OSU\, I landed a job at the NBC station in Dayton\, Ohio\, doing the morning shift. Soon another station came calling — this time a smaller market FOX affiliate that offered a unique opportunity. They asked me to start an entire weather department from the ground up. I was to be their first Chief Meteorologist in Traverse City\, Michigan. Talk about snow! \nNot 15 months later\, I was attending a weather conference and was asked if I’d like to work in New Orleans. I soon was moving to the Big Easy as the weekend meteorologist at WWL-TV\, the CBS affiliate on the Gulf Coast. I spent more than three years there\, chasing hurricanes and rainstorms that often flooded the city. The entire city sits below sea level. Talk about heavy rain! In 2005\, I actually went back to help out my old station before a hurricane hit the Gulf coast. I ended up being in the middle of the worst hurricane in U.S. history\, Hurricane Katrina. I rode the storm out in a cramped conference hall attached to the Super Dome and spent two nights in the city before being moved up to Baton Rouge\, where I stayed for 15 days working for WWL. I went back a week later to work again as Hurricane Rita approached the Gulf Coast and stayed another two weeks. \nNow\, I am happy to be here at WCNC Charlotte as part of the WCNC Charlotte Weather Team. I really love Charlotte and the Carolinas with their proximity to the mountains and the beach. I’m an avid outdoor adventurer\, and the Carolinas provide me and my wife and 2 children along with our dog lots of places to explore. \nWhen I’m not working I still follow the weather. It’s a passion that I’ve luckily turned into a career. I love biking\, golfing\, hiking and playing soccer and basketball. \nIf you see me around\, feel free to ask me about the weather. It’s my favorite topic of conversation. \nEmail me at bpanovich@wcnc.com or follow Brad Panovich on Facebook\, Twitter and Instagram. \n

DESCRIPTION:TOPIC: The Meck Dec: How Charlotte’s Actions on May 20\, 1775 Inspired My Novel\, Deadly Declarations\nIn this presentation\, we explore the lead up to the revolutionary war and how those events unfolded to cause Charlotte to declare independence from the most powerful nation in the world on May 20\, 1775\, and we explore the controversy of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence. \nWas it a real document\, as founding father John Adams believed? Or\, as Thomas Jefferson quipped\, was it “spurious?” And we take a peek at the conspiracies surrounding the Meck Dec\, what North Carolina did to try to prove the story of the Meck Dec was true\, and how all that folded into and became the perfect foundation of conflict for a novel. \n\nBIOGRAPHY\nLandis Wade is a recovering trial lawyer turned author turned founder and host of the popular Charlotte Readers Podcast (where he has conducted more than 300 author interviews)\, whose recent novel\, Deadly Declarations\, received praise by Kirkus Reviews\, BookLife Reviews and Midwest Book Reviews\, and was named a Finalist in the Thriller/Adventure category of the 2022 International Book Awards. \nHis third book—The Christmas Redemption—won the Holiday category of the 12th Annual National Indie Excellence Awards. SUMMARY:War Crimes / Dr. Jacob Wobig
DESCRIPTION:GREAT DECISIONS TOPIC: Pursuing Accountability for War Crimes in the Russia-Ukraine Conflict\nIt has become increasingly clear that there have seen serious abuses of civilians and prisoners of war in the Russia-Ukraine conflict.  Many of these abuses may rise to the level of war crimes and crimes against humanity.  However\, the application and enforcement of the laws of war have always been complicated by both law and politics.  This talk will consider how and whether atrocities in Ukraine – and other 21st century conflicts – will be punished under the laws of war. \n\nBIOGRAPHY \nDr. Wobig teaches political science and history at Wingate University.  His classes cover various aspects of global politics.  His research focuses international and comparative human rights\, and international law.  Prior to joining academia\, he practiced as an attorney in his home state of Nebraska. \nEducation wise\, he obtained his PhD at the University of Nebraska\, where he wrote his dissertation on regional treaties to support democracy in their member-states. Recently\, he has focused on recent trends in human rights around the world. He states that\, “We are in a “rights recession” in which many human rights are being restricted by governments around the world. I am trying to understand why.” \nIn addition to his teaching role\, Dr. Wobig is also the advisor to the Wingate Model United Nations team. They have been a very successful group over the last 8 years \nGrowing up in a small ranching town in western Nebraska called Valentine\, he attended the University of Nebraska – Lincoln to study political science and international relations. After graduating in 2001 he then went to the University of Iowa College of Law\, where he became Editor in Chief of the Journal of Transnational Law and Contemporary Problems. His interest in politics was already firmly entrenched by this time and through undergrad and law school he worked as a volunteer in about half a dozen campaigns for local and statewide offices. After law school\, he worked as an attorney in Lincoln\, Nebraska for 3 years where his practice was split between insurance defense and issues of administrative and constitutional law. \nhttps://creeca.wisc.edu/read-war-crimes-what-are-they-how-can-they-be-prosecuted-by-dr-francine-hirsch/
