SUMMARY:Earthquakes - A Lot of Shaking Going On with Kenneth Taylor
DESCRIPTION:TOPIC: Earthquakes — Alot of Shaking Going On\nSPEAKER:  Kenneth Taylor\, North Carolina Geological Survey; N.C. Department of Environmental Quality (NC DEQ) \nTravel over several of time in the eastern half of our country to see the number and severity of earthquakes in the Eastern and Central Part of the US. \n\nBIOGRAPHY \nBorn in North Carolina — Interest in earthquakes began after the 1971 San Fernando in California. I did not feel an earthquake personally until many years later. \nIn 1971\, I lived at Fort Bragg in North Carolina.  That year\, the San Fernando earthquake in California got me excited.  I am a seismologist / geophysicist / geologist.  When I went to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill\, I was the Teaching Assistant (TA) for the geophysics professor — Dr. Christine Powell (as an undergraduate). \nAfter getting my undergraduate degree in geology\, I went to the University of South Carolina in Columbia.  With my M.S. I got a job at Teledyne-Geotech in Dallas\, Texas as a research geophysicist.  Teledyne-Geotech made the most advanced borehole seismometers in the world.  We even recorded a volcanic eruption in Mexico with sensors that were hundreds of miles from the volcano. \nAfter a few years at T- G\, I moved with my wife to St. Louis to complete my doctorate in geophysics.  I chased earthquakes across the Midwest as well as recording seismic events in the Arctic Circle.  The team I was part of during the second summer in the high artic recorded the last soviet underground nuclear test. \nI got a Congressional Science Fellowship after completing my Doctorate.  I spent that year in the Washington area as worked for Senator Harry Reid. \nAfter that\, I came back to North Carolina and lived in Asheville\, and Wake County working for the State Government ever since.

SUMMARY:Lighting a Pathway for Young Artists with Corey Mitchell
DESCRIPTION:TOPIC: Lighting a Pathway for Young Artists\nSPEAKER: Corey Mitchell\, Founder of Theater Gap Initiative \nMitchell will talk about his journey as an arts educator spreading the message of excellence and helping to create a pathway for young artists to have a career and change their trajectory. \nThe Theatre Gap Initiative (TGI)\, founded by longtime Charlotte educator Corey Mitchell\, is a nonprofit college-prep program for high school grads who aspire to apply for Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) and conservatory programs. TGI’s programming is focused on helping students of color successfully navigate the process of applications\, prescreens and auditions. \nIt was founded on the principle that equity means more than the distribution of wealth. He was selected as a top 50 Finalist for 2017 Global Teacher Prize and was named North Carolina Outstanding Theatre Arts Educator by the North Carolina Theatre Conference. Most recently\, he was selected as the first recipient of the Stephen Schwartz Musical Theatre Teacher of the Year Award\, presented by the Educational Theatre Association and the ASCAP\, and also received The Cato Lifetime Achievement in Teaching Award from the Arts and Science Council of Charlotte. SUMMARY:A Latvian Exile Comes to America with Joseph Ellis
DESCRIPTION:TOPIC: Karlis Leyasmeyer and the Baptist Speaker’s Circuit: A Latvian Exile Comes to America\nSPEAKER: Joseph Ellis\, Professor of Political Science\, Assistant Dean of Arts and Sciences\, Wingate University \nIn 1949\, a little known Latvian refugee named Karlis Leyasmeyer would arrive with his family in Philadelphia\, after several years spent at a displaced persons camp in Germany. In less than a year\, Leyasmeyer was traveling North America as a highly desired speaker in evangelical circles\, speaking on the evils of communism and the glory of God. How did Leyasmeyer — a recent political exile — achieve such notoriety in such a short period of time\, and what does this tell us about anti-communist movements in the 1950s among recent refugees?
