At the Miami Herald\, he rose to State Editor\, responsible for coverage of Florida outside Miami and Fort Lauderdale. In 1999 he transferred to the Charlotte Observer\, both owned by Knight Ridder Newspapers. \nAt the Charlotte Observer\, he was a writer and columnist until his retirement in 2017. With Knight Ridder\, he served on three teams that won the Pulitzer Prize for Public Service\, for Hurricane Andrew in Miami\, the 1997 Red River Flood in North Dakota and Hurricane Katrina on the Gulf Coast. Demonstrating an uncanny knack for making beneficial alliances during the colonial and Revolutionary eras\, and for navigating the shifting sands of US domestic Indian policies\, the Catawba have managed to maintain their identity as a people\, and to carry their heritage forward into the 21st century. Today\, the Catawba remain a vibrant\, modern\, and rapidly growing tribe. \nPlease join us on February 20\, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at the Catawba Cultural Center.
